JACK: Being here, I’ve seen things I never dreamt I’d see. Loved people I never would have known if I’d just stayed where I was. And I wouldn’t change that for the world.

in response to this, a little late, but I wanted to have my hair freshly purpled. Me and my computer, The Neverender, a 2.3ghz AMD with 4 gigs of memory, running Crunchbang Linux. I learned to build computers by building this machine. I started running this particular distribution of Linux on my laptop last year, and solely sometime in January when I got a rather nasty MBR rootkit on the desktop. I started out dual-booting off two drives to try and remove the ick, then just to rescue all my artwork. I gave up on the Windows install when that drive died. I never looked back when, not only did Crunchbang work just fine with my tablet, but I also found ways to make GIMP work just as well as the Corel Painter I’d been using for years. Linux is a challenge. It’s consistent challenging, and I am constantly learning new things because of it, it keeps me sharp. I understand better how hardware and software work together after learning the very different file structures. I’m teaching myself to program in Python, and learning how networking works with (free!) tools like Wireshark and nmap. It is damn near impossible to make this thing fall over. And if you think about the nature of open source software? All of it is built for the love of what it does, what it can do. Linux is not just for neckbeads; it’s for the curious, the control freaks, and those who never want to be satisfied with their toolset.

My Girlfriend’s Fandom is Linux. Yes. Not just yes, but FUCK YES.

FUCK YES.

This awesome creature (yes, this really is a living thing, not a piece of candy or glass) is a Jewel Caterpillar (Acraga coa) spotted by naturalist and photographer Gerardo Aizpuru near Cancun, Mexico. No word if it tastes like a gummi worm, but we’ll let you take the first bite. Here’s Gerardo’s own description:

“Photo take in a mangrove area , found this Stoning translucent caterpillar lay on a Red Mangrove tree leaf this morning early. Just can believe there is some species like this around the world. looks like made of glass whit small red mushroom inside every pic. about 3 cm long.”

The bottom image, as you might’ve surmised, shows the bright and impressively furry moth that this wicked little caterpillar eventually becomes. Transforming from one sort of awesome creature into another different, but still entirely awesome, creature? We’re seriously impressed.
